Vavilov was a pioneer with his centers of origins

World War II has come to town, the building’s dark - the building is unheated
Cats are eaten, rodents are around
Workers take shifts to protect potatoes, beans and rice
But secretly, seeds are smuggled out - the peanut specialist dies

Four hundred feet inside the mountain lies a new vault tween Norway and the North Pole
No one’s there but reindeers and bears

All its galleries have concrete walls, the entrance is a steel door
If a rocket was fired it would hit the bowl (and go) back out where it came from

Typhoon Milenyo once sprayed heavy rain, destroying a crop gene bank
So did conflicts in Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan

Everyone back home counts on me but getting there took me weeks
The sea’s so restless and the air so hot I can barely breathe
